Microscopic root fissure

Microscopic root cracks are fine, hard-to-detect cracks at the root edge that seriously affect bending strength.

Physico-chemical working mechanism

Microscopic root fissures arise from mechanical stresses or chemical reactions at the root entry point. They are too small to see with the naked eye, but they can affect the material structure.

Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding

These fissures grow under mechanical stress and lead to cracks or fractures. They reduce the bend strength and the service life of the joint, which can be dangerous especially in highly stressed applications.

Workshop practice & action instructions

To avoid microscopic root fissures, make sure the weld seam is correct and it cools down properly. Use suitable protective agents and do a careful surface treatment. If you suspect them, a microscopic inspection is required.
