Solid-solution ferrite
Solid solution ferrite is a solid solution of alloying elements in the cubic iron lattice. It forms the soft matrix in many steels and gives them their formability.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
Ferrite solid solution is a solid solution of alloying elements like carbon, silicon, or nickel in the cubic lattice of iron. These elements are embedded in the crystal structure and affect its properties.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
Ferrite solid solution gives steels their formability and toughness, but too much carbon can change to martensite, which raises hardness and lowers ductility. With wrong welding temperature or too fast cooling, the structure can change, leading to cracks and failure.
Shop practice & procedures
To keep ferrite solid solution in steels, hold the weld at the right temperature. Cooling too fast (t8/5 < 10 s) can change to martensite and raise hardness. For heavy steels, cool slowly (t8/5 > 30 s) to stabilize the structure.
