Solid Solution Hardening by Silicon
Silicon increases the strength of ferrite by substitutional incorporation, causing elastic lattice distortions.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Silicon atoms replace carbon atoms in the ferritic lattice. This causes distortions in the crystal lattice, which increase mechanical strength.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Too high silicon content can lead to poor fusion and porosity. Too low hardness can make the material susceptible to cracking.
Shop Practice & Action Guidelines
Make sure the silicon content is in the optimal range (approximately 0.2-0.5 %). Monitor the melting processes carefully and avoid too rapid cooling.
