Mottled cast iron

A transition microstructure in cast iron exhibiting both white solidified areas and grey graphitic zones side by side.

Mottled cast iron forms when both white and gray microstructures develop during cooling of cast iron. This makes the material unevenly hard and brittle, which can quickly lead to cracks during welding. If you have to weld this kind of material, the main thing is to control the heat input and not let the part cool too quickly. Uniform preheating and slow cooling are essential to avoid new stresses.
