Mottled Cast Structure

A mixed white-and-gray solidification structure of cast iron containing both metastable carbides and stable graphite side by side.

Mottled cast structure forms when, during cooling, hard carbides precipitate alongside graphite. The material then becomes non-uniform, brittle, and hard to machine. In welding this is a problem because the different structural zones can lead to stresses and cracks. You must preheat the part properly and control the heat input well so that cooling is slow and even. Otherwise the weld or the component will crack.
