Fillet weld asymmetry

Weld asymmetry is an unequal leg length in fillet welds, leading to unfavorable force distribution and affecting weld strength.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Weld asymmetry arises from different stresses on the two joining partners. This can lead to unequal strain and deformation, which can stabilize the weld but impair its strength.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

An asymmetric weld can lead to increased stress buildup and thus to cracking or hot cracking. The service life of the weld is reduced because it is not uniformly loaded.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To avoid weld asymmetry, ensure symmetrical preparation of the joint faces. Make sure the weld legs are of equal length and the joining partners are evenly loaded. For complex components, special assembly planning may be required.
