Throat thickness
Weld thickness is the minimum thickness of a weld that is technically and safety-critical. It determines the load-bearing capacity and behavior of the weld under mechanical stress.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Weld thickness affects the stress distribution in the weld. A weld that is too thin cannot absorb enough stress and leads to cracks or deformation.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
A weld that is too thin can suddenly fail under mechanical load, which can pose safety issues. A weld that is too thick increases stress and can lead to hot cracks or failure of the components.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
Always follow the design specifications for weld thickness. Use appropriate welding processes and parameters to produce a sound and safe weld. After welding, check the weld thickness with a microscope or an ultrasonic device.
