Crater Fill Routine

Crater fill is a programmed sequence at the end of the weld that controls the current reduction. This prevents end craters and cracks in the weld metal.

Physikalisch-chemischer Wirkmechanismus

At the end of the weld, the current is reduced in a controlled manner, which lowers the local temperature. This prevents the metal from sagging and the formation of craters or cracks.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Without crater prevention, crater formation and cracks can occur at the weld end. This can lead to defects in the weld metal and impair mechanical properties.

Werkstattpraxis & Handlungsanweisungen

Reduce the current in the last 10 cm of the weld to 50% of the normal welding current. Keep this reduction for at least 2 seconds to ensure crater formation is prevented.
