Cluster of imperfections

Weld defect clustering is a consistent arrangement of multiple parallel weld defects in a limited area. It worsens the overall rating of the weld.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Weld defect clusters occur from repeated or consecutive malfunctions of the welding process, like poor mixing of metals or lack of cooling. These defects consolidate into a connected area with several parallel flaws.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Weld defect clusters significantly reduce mechanical properties like strength and toughness. They increase susceptibility to cracking and wear, which can be dangerous especially in highly stressed components.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To avoid weld defect clusters, make sure the weld area is carefully prepared, with clean surfaces and proper metal prep. Ensure the weld cools adequately to prevent uneven grain structure. If you spot clusters of defects, check your equipment and optimize the process.
