Groove angle
The angle between the machined edge and the workpiece surface determines the accessibility of the arc for welding.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The joint edge angle affects how well the arc can reach the edge. A smaller angle (close to perpendicular) improves access, while a larger angle (less perpendicular) restricts it.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
If the edge angle is too large, the arc may not reach the edge properly. This can lead to incomplete fusion and possible cracks. Too small an angle increases the risk of hot cracking and can make welding harder.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
For optimal welding, the edge angle should be between 45° and 60°. If the angle is too large (over 70°), smooth or re-machine the edge. If it's too small (under 30°), try welding with a longer arc or a different technique.
