Weld Cross-Section Symmetry

Weld cross-section symmetry is the even build-up of the weld to ensure a uniform stress distribution.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Weld cross-section symmetry refers to the uniform formation of the weld cross-section. This means the cross-section of the weld is uniform in all directions, without any uneven distortion or stresses.

Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding

An asymmetric weld can lead to uneven stresses, increasing the risk of cracks and wear. Stress concentration in uneven welds can cause hot cracks or cold cracks, especially in stiff steels.

Workshop practice & instructions

To ensure symmetric weld cross-section formation, it is important that the weld has the same width and shows no uneven distortion. This can be ensured by correct welding parameters and careful control of the welding process.
