Root Reinforcement
The root reinforcement is the permissible rise of the weld metal on the root side that ensures complete fusion and static strength.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
The root excess weld metal forms through the stress build-up during welding. The steel is compressed and deformed, which leads to a raised area.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Too much root excess can lead to stress concentrations and cracks that hurt the strength of the weld. Too little excess points to insufficient penetration and can lead to incomplete joints.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
The allowable root excess is normally 0.5 to 1 mm. With an excess over 2 mm, cracking is likely and the weld must be redone. Below 0.3 mm, it points to insufficient penetration.
