Weld Reinforcement Height
The excess amount of weld metal that protrudes beyond the theoretical joint line and contributes to load capacity. Precise control avoids unwanted notches.
Physical-Chemical Action Mechanism
During welding, excess material forms an additional layer extending beyond the joint line of the part. This build-up can result from pressure and stress during the welding process.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Excessive weld reinforcement can increase notching, making the material more prone to cracking. On one hand, the build-up can lead to mechanical stress; on the other hand, it can create stress zones in the weld that may cause hot cracks or part failure.
Shop Practice & Action Guidelines
To achieve optimal weld reinforcement, the welding process should be set up so the material doesn't build up excessively. This can be controlled by welding pressure and voltage. Recommended reinforcement is about 0.5 to 1 mm. If too high, adjust the welding parameters or check the process.
