Weld protrusion
The weld protrusion is the amount a weld extends beyond the component contour and must be mechanically finished.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The weld is formed by the joining of metals under high temperature and pressure. In some cases, the weld protrudes beyond the part contour, requiring mechanical post-processing.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Excessive weld protrusion can lead to mechanical stresses and possibly cracking. It can also detract from the aesthetic quality of the weld joint. Insufficient protrusion can result in inadequate fusion or tight weld joint clearances.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To ensure optimal weld protrusion, position the weld so that it protrudes slightly beyond the part contour (approx. 1-2 mm). This facilitates mechanical post-processing and prevents unwanted stresses. For special applications or materials, the required protrusion may vary, so precise planning and control are necessary.
