Nanoindentation
Nanoindentation is a precise materials testing method where a nano-scale indenter penetrates the sample. Force and depth are measured continuously to determine elastic and plastic properties.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
In nanoindentation, a very fine, sharp tip (often diamond) is pressed into the sample material. During indentation, the force is continuously recorded and the indentation depth is measured. This allows you to analyze the material's response to mechanical loading.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Nanoindentation is especially useful for testing weld zones and materials. It lets you determine local properties like hardness, elasticity, and toughness without destroying the material. Wrong values or a faulty measurement can lead to inaccurate results, which in turn leads to wrong conclusions about material selection or treatment.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
For correct nanoindentation, you need special equipment. The sample must be clean and flat to get accurate results. Force and indentation depth are measured in specific areas of the material, e.g., in the weld or the surrounding area. Always run the measurement under controlled conditions to compensate for factors like temperature and humidity.
