Neutralization rinse
After pickling, the weld is rinsed with an aqueous rinse agent that stops chemical residual reactions and prevents undercut corrosion.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The neutralization rinse uses a water-based rinse with alkaline additives to neutralize the pH of the weld. This reacts with leftover acids and stops chemical reactions.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Without careful neutralization rinse, leftover chemical reactions can occur in the weld, leading to undercutting corrosion. This can significantly reduce the strength and lifespan of the weld.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
After pickling, immediately clean the weld with a water-based rinse. The rinse should have a pH of 7-8 and be left on the weld for at least 30 seconds. This ensures all chemical reactions are stopped and the weld is protected from corrosion.
