Non-equilibrium solidus
The shifted solidus line during incomplete diffusion upon rapid cooling, which promotes residual melt.
Physikalisch-chemischer Wirkmechanismus
Non-equilibrium solidus occurs when metals cool too quickly. In that case, the material can't fully exchange and equalize. As a result, some material stays liquid, which is called residual melt.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Non-equilibrium solidus can cause residual melt in the weld, leading to voids and other defects that hurt strength and mechanical properties. Also, fast cooling can cause hot cracks.
Werkstattpraxis & Handlungsanweisungen
To avoid non-equilibrium solidus, controlled cooling is essential. Use cooling water or special cooling media. Set the cooling rate so the material has enough time to exchange and solidify evenly. A proper cooling curve is key to avoiding residual melt and hot cracks.
