Nickel

Nickel stabilizes austenite and increases toughness and low-temperature properties. It prevents the delta ferrite phenomenon and improves corrosion resistance.

Physikalisch-chemischer Wirkmechanismus

Nickel acts as an austenite stabilizer by increasing the formation energy of δ-austenite. This prevents γ-austenite from transforming into δ-austenite at lower temperatures.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Without nickel, austenite could transform into δ-austenite, which hurts toughness and corrosion resistance. With the right nickel content, it improves the microstructure and extends component life.

Werkstattpraxis & Handlungsanweisungen

Use nickel in alloys to boost toughness and low-temperature properties. When welding austenitic steel, the correct nickel percentage is critical. Always check the specific requirements of the alloy you're using.
