Nickel austenite stabilization

The property of nickel as an alloying element to thermodynamically suppress the body-centred cubic alpha-iron lattice at room temperature and stabilize the face-centred cubic gamma lattice.

Nickel stabilizes the austenitic structure in steel. This keeps the weld tough and prevents hard, brittle spots. Too much nickel, however, makes the material soft and weakens it. So pay attention to the right alloy, then it'll be fine.
