Nickel-Base Precipitation Hardening

Enhancement of the high-temperature strength of nickel superalloys through the targeted precipitation of coherent gamma-prime phases. These effectively block dislocation glide under thermal and mechanical loads.

Nickel-base precipitation hardening means: during annealing, you precipitate fine particles in the matrix. They block dislocation movement and make the material high-strength, even at heat. When welding, that's the crux: if you manage the heat incorrectly, you dissolve the particles again or don't get them cleanly precipitated. Then the part becomes soft and tears under load. So you have to control the heat input and cooling so the structure is right. And if you do a heat treatment after welding, do it so the particles are cleanly precipitated again.
