Nickel-base high-temperature oxidation

The chemical reaction of nickel alloys with oxygen at elevated temperatures, where dense protective layers of chromium or aluminum oxide protect the base metal from scaling.

Nickel-based alloys form dense oxide layers at high heat that protect the material. When welding, you have to watch that the heat doesn't stay in the workpiece too long, otherwise the oxide layer can crack and cause cracks or distortion. Keep the weld zone clean and work with enough shielding gas so no oxygen reaches the hot spot. If you control the heat input, the structure stays stable and you avoid problems.
