Nickel-Base Carbide Precipitation

Precipitation of chromium or molybdenum carbides at the grain boundaries of nickel superalloys at intermediate temperatures, serving to block grain boundary sliding.

Nickel-based carbides precipitate at intermediate temperatures and settle at the grain boundaries. This blocks grain sliding and makes the material stronger and tougher. When welding, you have to be careful not to cool the heat-affected zone too quickly, otherwise the precipitation won't occur and the structure becomes soft. The correct cooling time depends on the alloy, so you have to follow the data sheet.
