Nickel-Base Grain Boundary Segregation

Accumulation of trace elements or alloy additions at the grain boundaries of nickel superalloys, which can lead to hot cracking or loss of ductility at high temperatures.

If cooling is too slow during welding, certain alloying elements migrate to the grain boundaries and accumulate there. This makes the structure brittle and the weld gets cracks, especially when hot. You have to control cooling so the elements don't get a chance to gather. For critical alloys, keep heat input low and avoid unnecessary post-weld heating.
