Nickel-Base Weld Metal Dilution Ratio

The dilution rate indicates how much of the base material has melted into the filler metal. For nickel alloys, a high dilution rate is important to avoid cracks.

Physico-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The dilution rate describes the ratio between the melted base material and the filler material in the weld. In nickel alloys, a homogeneous structure forms when the dilution rate is high.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A too low dilution rate can lead to uneven deformation and cracking. A too high dilution rate can result in a weld that is too soft with poor strength.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

For nickel alloys, the dilution rate should be at least 80 %. This is achieved by optimally setting the welding temperature and time. If the temperature is too low, the risk of cracking increases; if too high, the weld strength can be lost.
