Nickel-Chromium Passivation Layer

A nickel-chromium passivation layer forms on nickel-rich alloys and protects against corrosion via a dense oxide film.

Physico-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The nickel-chromium passivation layer forms through the reaction of chromium and sodium hydroxide with air. This creates a stabilized chromium oxide that forms a dense protective layer.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

This layer protects the material from further corrosion and increases its toughness and resistance. However, improper handling can destroy it, leading to corrosion susceptibility.

Workshop Practice & Procedures

Make sure the weld cools in a dry environment after finishing. Do not use chemical cleaning methods that could destroy the chromium oxide.
