Nickel-Chromium Scaling Resistance

Resistance of nickel-chromium alloys against oxidative mass loss at elevated temperatures through the formation of a continuous, dense chromium oxide surface scale.

Nickel-chromium alloys protect themselves from oxidation at high temperatures by forming a thin, dense chromium oxide layer. When welding, you must be careful not to unnecessarily destroy this layer, otherwise the material will burn away and you'll get cracks or scale. Keep heat input as low as possible and weld quickly so the alloy doesn't overheat. After welding, the weld should cool slowly so the protective oxide layer can fully rebuild. If you make the weld clean and with the right filler metal, the scale resistance is maintained.
