Nickel-Iron Soft Magnetic Alloy
Nickel-iron soft magnetic alloys are metals with high magnetic permeability and low hardness. They are used for magnetic shielding and in sensitive sensors.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Nickel-iron soft magnetic alloys contain a high proportion of nickel and iron, which influences their magnetic properties. The high permeability means they can let magnetic fields through easily. The low hardness keeps them flexible and not too prone to cracking.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
When welding nickel-iron soft magnetic alloys, watch out especially for deformation. Too high temperatures or insufficient cooling can lead to grain coarsening and higher hardness, which hurts the magnetic shielding capability. The weld can also become prone to cracking.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
• Use a protected welding technique like TIG welding to control the grain and hardness.
• Cool the weld slowly (t8/5 > 25 s) to get an even structure.
• Avoid excessive temperatures during welding, since these can lead to higher hardness and cracking.
