Nickel-Copper Monel Solid Solution Stability

Nearly complete mutual solubility in the binary nickel-copper system, ensuring a stable single-phase austenite-like structure across the entire concentration range.

Nickel and copper are completely soluble in each other in the solid state. This means that when welding Monel, you get a single-phase solid solution that doesn't undergo any phase transformation. That's exactly why there are no hardening cracks or problems from cooling stresses; the weld remains tough and tight. In practice, this means you don't have to worry about preheating or post-weld heat treatment. The only important thing is to work with clean filler material and keep the heat input steady. When welding, avoid overheating the weld and don't build up the layers too thick, so the molten pool flows cleanly and gives a dense, pore-free weld.
