Nickel-Molybdenum Acid Resistance

Nickel-molybdenum acid resistance is high resistance to reducing acids like hydrochloric acid due to a high molybdenum content in the nickel matrix.

Physico-chemical mechanism of action

Nickel-molybdenum alloys in such a way that the molybdenum prevents chemical reaction with acids. It forms a dense protective layer on the surface of the material, reducing acid interaction and preventing corrosion damage.

Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding

If the molybdenum alloy is missing or too low, nickel can corrode quickly, especially in hydrochloric acid environments. This leads to cracks and loss of strength in the weld.

Workshop practice & action instructions

Make sure the nickel-molybdenum alloy has a molybdenum content of at least 12 %. When welding in hydrochloric acid environments, use a suitable protective coating or insulating material around the weld.
