Nickel Powder Metallurgy Consolidation
Hot isostatic pressing of pre-alloyed nickel powders to achieve defect-free, isotropic high-performance components for turbines. This avoids coarse segregations of conventional cast ingots.
Nickel powder is compacted in a closed container under heat and pressure into a dense, homogeneous workpiece. That's hot isostatic pressing, or HIP for short. This gives you a pore-free material with uniform properties in all directions – unlike casting, where components can settle. If you want to weld such a part later, it behaves basically like normal, dense nickel. Just make sure the surface is clean, then you won't have any surprises.
