Nickel Superalloy Gamma Prime Precipitates

Coherent intermetallic precipitates in nickel-base alloys responsible for outstanding high-temperature strength. Their stability determines the maximum operating temperature.

Gamma primes are fine precipitates in nickel-base superalloys that give the alloy its high strength at high temperatures. When welding, you have to be careful not to put too much heat in, otherwise they dissolve and the material becomes soft. Then cracks can occur. So use a process with low heat input and keep the interpass temperature low. After welding, let it cool slowly so that the precipitates can form properly again.
