Nickel Toughness Factor
Improvement of cryogenic properties via homogeneously dissolved nickel in the solid solution, supporting dislocation mobility at low temperatures.
Nickel makes steel tough, even when it gets cold. That means the material doesn't crack easily but rather deforms. When welding, you have to be careful that the weld doesn't get too hard and brittle, otherwise you lose exactly that cold toughness. Keep the heat input in check and don't let the part cool too fast, then the weld stays tough and holds even at sub-zero temperatures.
