Nickel-Based TCP Phase Precipitation

The undesirable formation of topologically close-packed phases during long-term exposure of nickel superalloys in the high-temperature range. These brittle phases deplete the matrix of strengthening elements and degrade mechanical properties.

In nickel-based superalloys, excessive heat input can form brittle microstructural constituents that strip the alloy of important strengthening elements. This makes the material prone to cracking, especially in the weld zone. So you have to keep the heat input low and avoid unnecessary heating of the component. If you detect hardness or cracks after welding, it can be a sign of such a microstructural issue. Then the only remedy is to grind out the area and reweld with a cooler technique.
