Niobium carbide stabilization

Binding of carbon with niobium to prevent chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries in stainless steels. This reliably inhibits intergranular corrosion.

Niobium binds the carbon in the steel so that the chromium doesn't react to form carbides. If the chromium stays bound in the structure, it prevents intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone. For corrosion-resistant joints, use stabilized steels, then you're on the safe side. When welding, just make sure you keep the heat input in check, then the weld won't crack and the structure stays clean.
