Nitride precipitation hardening

The increase in strength through fine precipitations of nitride formers such as aluminum or titanium in the metal lattice. This effectively impedes dislocation movement.

Nitride formers like aluminum or titanium bind the nitrogen in the metal and form fine particles that harden the structure. When welding, you have to watch that the heat input is right – if it gets too hot or you cool too quickly, you won't get into the right range for precipitation. Then the material stays softer and more prone to cracking. So don't keep the weld hot too long and don't let it cool suddenly, then the hardness will be fine.
