Nitriding Steel
Nitriding steel is an alloyed steel with a high nitrogen content that achieves extreme surface hardness through gas nitriding. This improves wear resistance and service life.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
Nitriding steel contains additional nitride formers such as aluminum or chromium, which react to form nitrides on the surface during gas nitriding. This forms a harder layer on the steel surface.
Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding
Nitriding steel is especially sensitive to welding processes, as the increased hardness impairs ductility and the microstructure. Incorrect welding parameters can lead to hot cracks or a coarser surface.
Workshop practice & instructions
Welding nitriding steel requires careful pre-treatment. Use low heat and slow cooling to protect the microstructure. An optimal weld can be achieved by keeping the t8/5 time between 10 and 20 seconds.
