Quenching and Tempering of Nitriding Steel

Preparatory hardening and tempering treatment to produce a fine-grained sorbite microstructure as a defined supporting base for the subsequent thermochemical nitriding layer.

Nitriding steel is quenched and tempered before nitriding to make the structure fine-grained and tough. When welding, you have to be careful not to destroy this tempering. If you introduce too much heat, the grain coarsens and the steel loses its strength. The heat input during welding should therefore be kept low. After welding, the structure at the weld seam is usually no longer in the tempered state, which must be kept in mind during further processing.
