Nitriding Compound Layer

An extremely hard, nitrogen-rich outer zone formed on the component surface during gas or plasma nitriding. It substantially improves corrosion resistance and sliding properties.

Nitrided components have a hard, wear-resistant surface layer. It gets damaged quickly during welding if you put too much heat in. So you have to keep heat input as low as possible and completely remove the layer in the weld area beforehand, e.g., by grinding. After that, the layer is locally rebuilt or you accept that the hardness at the weld is gone. Otherwise, you'll get cracks or the layer will flake off.
