Nitrocarburizing

Thermochemical surface hardening process in which the surface is enriched simultaneously with nitrogen and small amounts of carbon.

Nitrocarburizing is a case-hardening process where nitrogen and carbon diffuse into the surface. This makes the case hard and wear-resistant, but also brittle. If you have to weld on nitrocarburized parts, the hard layer in the weld area is done for – you have to grind it off completely beforehand, otherwise you'll get cracks or porosity. After welding, the hardness is gone at that spot, you need to be aware of that. If the function requires it, you have to re-treat the area after welding or replace the part.
