Nitrocarburizing Process

A thermochemical process for producing a thin compound layer and diffusion zone through simultaneous enrichment of nitrogen and carbon. The objective is to optimize sliding wear and corrosion protection.

Nitrocarburizing is a case-hardening process where nitrogen and carbon diffuse into the surface. This creates a hard, wear-resistant layer that also improves corrosion protection. If you want to weld afterward, caution is advised: the hardened case must be completely removed before welding, e.g., by grinding. Otherwise, the material will crack because the layer is too hard and brittle. Also, remember that the heat from welding can destroy the case in the surrounding area – so when in doubt, grind generously and prepare the area cleanly.
