Normalizing

Heating above the upper critical temperature followed by still-air cooling to produce a refined, uniform grain structure.

Normalizing is done when the steel has a coarse or distorted structure from prior rolling, forging, or welding. You heat the part fully to austenitizing temperature, hold briefly to allow the structure to transform, then cool in still air. This refines the grain, making the steel tougher and more workable. It's especially important if you want to continue stress-relieved and crack-safe after welding.
