Normalizing Heat Treatment Process

An austenitization process followed by cooling in still air, producing a fine-grained, homogeneous microstructure. It eliminates irregular prior structures resulting from casting or rolling processes.

Normalizing means: Heat the part evenly above the transformation temperature and heat it all the way through. This dissolves the structure and makes it uniform again. Then let it cool in still air, not too fast and not in a draft. This gives you a fine, uniform structure, the material becomes easier to machine, and stresses are relieved. If you cool too fast or leave the part too hot, you'll get a hard, brittle structure or new stresses. The holding time depends on the material thickness, just let the part glow through completely.
