Surface Decontamination

Surface decontamination is the removal of dust, dirt, and oxides before coating steps. It ensures good adhesion of the coating.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Surface decontamination removes adhering foreign particles, oxides, and pickling residues through chemical reactions or mechanical cleaning. This improves surface readiness and increases the coating's adhesion.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

If decontamination is missing, dust particles and oxides can get under the coating, leading to corrosion and coating wear. This can cause cracking and loss of mechanical properties in the material.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

For metals, use fine mechanical polishing or chemical cleaners like sulfuric acid. Make sure the surface is completely dry and free of paint residues. For high-quality coatings, thorough decontamination is essential.
