Surface Roughness Measurement
Surface roughness measurement measures the microgeometric surface after pickling or blasting processes using stylus or optical methods. It checks the anchoring depth of coatings.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Surface roughness measurement quantifies the microgeometric surface of a material after pickling or blasting. Stylus or optical methods are used to measure roughness.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Surface roughness affects the anchoring depth of coatings. Too high roughness can lead to poor anchoring and thus low strength. A too smooth surface, on the other hand, can cause the coating to not adhere well.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use a roughness tester according to ISO 4287 or EN 13605. Measure roughness in µm Roughness Average (Ra). For coatings, values should be between 0.4 and 1.6 µm. Make sure the tester is calibrated correctly and the surface is clean before measuring.
