Surface Roughness Modification

The targeted modification of roughness parameters (such as Rz and Ra) through mechanical work-hardening processes. This minimizes the notch effect of microscopic surface notches and optimizes friction behavior.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Surface roughness modification refers to the process in which the microscopic surface of a material is altered by mechanical intervention. This can be achieved by polishing, sandblasting, or chemical hardening. The roughness of the surface affects the friction behavior and the service life of moving parts.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Excessively high surface roughness can lead to increased frictional resistance, which increases the weld volume and weakens the weld seam. Too low roughness, on the other hand, can lead to poorer weld joints and increased corrosion. The optimal roughness minimizes these risks and improves the service life of the weld seam.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To modify surface roughness, the following measures can be taken:

• Polishing: Smooth the surface with a fine polishing agent. This reduces roughness and improves friction behavior.

• Sandblasting: Abrade the surface by sandblasting to remove microscopic notches. This increases the service life of the weld seam.

• Chemical Hardening: Harden and smooth the surface using a suitable chemical agent. This improves both friction behavior and corrosion resistance.
