Surface Cracking

Surface cracks are visible or detectable by surface inspection cracks extending to the component surface. They indicate an acute risk of failure.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Surface cracks are caused by mechanical stress, welding processes, or chemical corrosion. They are visible or detectable through surface inspection techniques like microscopy.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Surface cracks can lead to failure under mechanical load because they impair the strength and hardness of components. They also increase susceptibility to corrosion and further failure.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Avoid surface cracks through careful weld preparation, correct welding parameters, and post-weld surface treatment. If surface cracks are detected, carry out a thorough repair before components are put back into service.
