surface hardening
Surface hardening increases the fatigue limit by introducing compressive residual stresses and increasing hardness in crack-sensitive surface layers. Typical methods include shot peening or roller burnishing.
Surface hardening creates compressive residual stresses in the workpiece. These make the component less sensitive to fatigue fractures and increase the hardness of the edge zone. If you want to weld afterwards, you have to be careful: The hardened zone can harden further during welding and lead to cracks. Therefore, grind the edge zone beforehand or choose welding parameters so that heat input remains controlled. Generally: Hardening is good for service life, but it makes welding harder if you don't take it into account.
