Weld Groove Included Angle
The included angle of the weld is the angle between the bevel faces. It ensures full access of the heat source and filler material to the base material, preventing incomplete fusion.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The opening angle determines how well the heat and filler metal penetrate the flanks of the base material. Too narrow an angle can cause the access to be blocked and the flank fusion to be incomplete.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Too narrow an opening angle can lead to insufficient flank fusion, resulting in incomplete weld fill and possible cracks in the material. Too wide an angle increases the risk of porosity and coarsens the grain structure.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
For a successful weld, the opening angle should be between 30° and 45°. For high-carbon steels or heavy materials, an angle of 60° to 70° may be required. Make sure the flanks are straight and symmetrical.
