Optical infrared pyrometry

Non-contact temperature measurement in the heat-affected zone for process monitoring and cooling control. It enables compliance with prescribed interpass temperatures during automated operation.

An infrared pyrometer measures surface temperature contactlessly via thermal radiation. This lets you monitor cooling after welding and see if you're within the microstructure window. If you distort the measurement, e.g., through scale, reflections, or too large a distance, the microstructure can be wrong – that leads to cracks or unwanted hardness. Calibrate the device regularly and always measure at the same spot, ideally directly behind the weld on bare metal. That way you know whether you need post-heating or if cooling is okay.
