Optical Roughness Measurement via Scatter
Optical roughness measurement via scattered light is a non-contact method that evaluates surface structure by analyzing diffusely reflected laser light. It provides info on the micro-geometry of parts.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
The method uses the scattered light that forms when laser light is reflected at the surface. The intensity and direction of the scattered light provide information about the surface structure.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
The roughness of a surface influences the weld quality, since it determines the contact between the welding materials and the component surface. Too high roughness can lead to porosity and reduced strength of the weld.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use the optical scattered light to measure the surface roughness before welding. A value of 0.2 µm is typical for a well-suited surface. With too high roughness, measures like polishing or chemical removal should be taken.
